  2. Mash the potatoes.

  3. Squeeze the greens dry and chop them finely.

Mix and bake

  1. Mix the mashed potatoes with the chopped greens, butter, and salt.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Mashed to form the soft, fluffy body of the dish.
Spinach (or other greens)
Adds color, flavor, and moisture-controlled texture once squeezed dry and chopped.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavor and softening the mash.

The step that matters

Squeeze the greens dry and chop them finely. Excess water from the greens thins the mashed potatoes and makes the mixture loose and soggy when baked. Squeezing removes that water, and fine chopping spreads the greens evenly through the mash.

Swap the spinach

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, butter):

  1. Chivefits better
  2. Onionfits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Spinachthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
