Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main meat and savory flavor that the broth is built on.
Onions
Soften during long simmering, adding sweetness and aroma to the broth.
Salt pork
Renders fat into the broth, adding richness and savory depth.
Potatoes
Release starch as they cook, giving the filling body and substance.
Flour
Thickens the cooking liquid into a spoonable sauce when brought to a boil.
Egg
Egg wash helps the pie crust brown and gain a glossy finish in the oven.

The step that matters

Stir until boiling after adding the flour. Flour must be fully dispersed in the liquid and brought to a boil so its starch swells and thickens the sauce. Stopping early leaves the filling thin or lumpy.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, onion, pork, potato, flour, egg):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. Nutmegthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, onion, pork, potato, flour, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
