Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Turnips
Form the body of the soup, becoming soft and thick as they cook and are puréed.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.
Water
Cooks the turnips until tender and creates the soup's liquid base.

The step that matters

Skim off any scum. Foam and impurities rise to the surface during boiling and simmering. Skimming them off keeps the soup clean-tasting and clear in appearance.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits better
  4. Turnipthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
