Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Green onions
Form the main body of the dish, softening into a soft, savoury mass as they stew.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, silky texture to the cooked onions.
Ketchup
Adds a touch of acidity and sweetness to balance the savoury onions.

The step that matters

Cook gently for 30 minutes. Gentle heat with just enough water lets the onions soften and release their sweetness slowly. Boiling hard can scorch the bottom of the pan or leave the onions tough and watery.

Swap the mint

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, sugar, butter, ketchup):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Capersfits better
  3. Celeryfits better
  4. Mintthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, sugar, butter, ketchup. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
