Orange Jelly, Simple

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Mix the water with the rinds of the oranges and let them infuse.

  2. Ensure there is no pith on the rind to avoid spoiling the jelly.

The flavor team

The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much aroma chemistry they share, and how many recipes mention both.

  1. Orange + lemontop 1% of all pairs

    Shared aroma: 3-hexenal (apple, fruity).

  2. Sugar + lemontop 18% of all pairs

    Shared aroma: 2-nonenal (fatty, green).

  3. Orange + sugartop 20% of all pairs

    Shared aroma: beta-damascenone (apple, rose).

Sugar and lemon share little aroma chemistry, yet 53,532 recipes mention both: they likely work on texture and structure more than aroma.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Gelatine
Sets the liquid into a firm, wobbly jelly as it cools.
Loaf sugar
Adds sweetness and helps give the jelly a smooth, clear body.
Orange juice
Provides the main orange flavour and most of the liquid in the jelly.
Orange rinds
Infused in water to add aromatic citrus oils and bitter depth.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the orange flavour.

The step that matters

Ensure there is no pith on the rind. White pith is bitter and can carry strong off-flavours into the infusion, spoiling the clean taste of the jelly.

Flavor stand-ins for the lemon

The recipe marks lemon as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (orange, sugar):

  1. Vanillabetter flavor fit
  2. Lemonthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against orange, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
