Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Soften during slow stewing and absorb the gravy's flavour while staying tender.
Flour
Coats the cucumbers for browning and thickens the gravy into a smooth sauce.
Fresh butter
Fries the cucumbers to a brown crust and enriches the gravy with fat and flavour.

The step that matters

Stew the cucumbers slowly until tender. Cucumbers are mostly water and turn soft quickly, so gentle, slow stewing keeps them tender and intact rather than mushy or falling apart.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cucumber, flour, butter, pepper):

  1. Chivefits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Lettucefits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cucumber, flour, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
