Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread crumbs
Absorb the hot milk and form the soft body of the pudding.
Milk
Softens the crumbs and provides moisture for a tender custard-like texture.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and set as it cooks, giving the pudding structure.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and contributes to the pudding's flavor.

The step that matters

Soaking the crumbs in boiling milk. The crumbs must fully absorb the hot milk and be covered to trap steam; otherwise they stay dry and lumpy, and the pudding texture turns uneven.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, milk, sugar, egg, butter, flour):

  1. Cinnamonfits about as well
  2. Nutmegthe original
  3. Capersfits less well
  4. Parsleyfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, milk, sugar, egg, butter, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
