Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chocolate
Melts into the base to give the filling its rich flavour and body.
Sugar
Sweetens the filling and helps it thicken as it boils.

The step that matters

Boiling until thick while stirring constantly. Sugar and melted chocolate can scorch on the bottom of the pan if left still, and the filling must reach a thick consistency to spread and hold between cake layers.

Swap the ginger

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chocolate, sugar, clove, cinnamon, vanilla):

  1. Cardamomfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Allspicefits better
  4. Gingerthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chocolate, sugar, clove, cinnamon, vanilla. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
