Individual Strawberry Shortcakes

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a hot oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare the shortcakes

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Roll out the baking powder biscuit dough to 1 inch thick.

  3. Cut the dough into diamonds, squares, or circles.

  4. Bake the cut dough in the hot oven until golden.

Assemble and serve

  1. Once baked, break open the shortcakes (do not cut).

  2. Spread butter on the inside of each shortcake, if desired.

  3. Fill with mashed sweetened strawberries.

  4. Top with more mashed strawberries and halved large strawberries.

  5. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

  6. For decoration, add a spoonful of whipped cream on top.

  7. Serve on a pretty plate.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Baking powder biscuit dough
Forms the tender, lightly rising base that holds the strawberries.
Mashed sweetened strawberries
Provide moisture and sweetness that soak into the shortcake.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the inside of the shortcake.
Whipped cream
Adds a light, creamy fat layer on top.

The step that matters

Bake the cut dough in the hot oven until golden. Baking until golden browns the surface and sets the structure. Underbaked biscuits stay gummy and collapse under the wet strawberries, while overbaking dries them out.
