Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round steak
Browned meat that builds the deep, savory flavor of the broth.
Onion
Sweetness and aroma that deepen as it browns with the meat and butter.
Okra
Adds body and thickness to the soup as it cooks down.

The step that matters

Browning the steak, butter, and onion. Frying until very brown develops deep flavors through the Maillard reaction and caramelization. Pale frying leaves the broth tasting flat.

Swap the okra

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, onion, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Okrathe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, onion, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
