Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, silky mouthfeel to the sauce.
Flour
Thickens the cooking liquid into a light sauce that coats the potatoes.
Milk
Forms the creamy base of the sauce with the reserved potato cooking liquid.

The step that matters

Stir in the flour mixture before boiling. Flour must be whisked smoothly into cold milk first, then stirred into the hot liquid, so it dissolves without lumps and thickens evenly as it heats.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, milk, butter, flour):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Parsleythe original
  4. Thymefits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, milk, butter, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
