Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Layer bread crumbs in a well-buttered baking dish.

  3. Add small bits of butter on top of the crumbs.

  4. Add a layer of sliced apples, sprinkling with sugar and nutmeg or cinnamon.

  5. Repeat layers until the dish is full.

  6. Pour ½ cup of water over the top.

  7. Bake in the oven until golden brown.

  8. Serve with hard sauce.
