Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread crumbs
Absorb the milk and eggs to form the body of the pudding.
Suet
Adds richness and fat, keeping the pudding moist and tender while steaming.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and help it set as it steams.
Milk
Moistens the crumbs and suet so the batter soaks and holds together.
Moist sugar
Adds sweetness and a soft, molasses-like flavour.
Apples
Add moisture and a fresh, tart fruity flavour to the pudding.

The step that matters

Let the mixture stand before steaming. Standing lets the bread crumbs fully absorb the milk and eggs. Without this soaking, the batter stays loose and the pudding can turn out wet or uneven in texture.
