Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Parsnips
Provide the main body and sweet, earthy flavor of the dish.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the cooked parsnips.
Butter sauce
Coats the parsnips with extra richness and moisture for serving.

The step that matters

Cooking the parsnips until tender. Parsnips cooked too briefly stay firm and starchy, while overcooking makes them soft and waterlogged. Cutting pieces to a consistent thickness helps them cook evenly so they become tender at the same time.

Swap the parsnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vinegar, butter, pepper, sauce):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Shallotfits better
  4. Parsnipthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against vinegar, butter, pepper, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
