Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Australian meat
Provides the savoury bulk and richness that forms the body of the pie.
Mashed potatoes
Adds moisture and binds the mixture so it holds together when baked.
Breadcrumbs
Absorb liquid and give the filling its body, while the topping crisps and browns in the oven.
Dripping
Adds fat that helps the top brown and gives a richer flavour.

The step that matters

Adding the water before baking. Water in the dish turns to steam and softens the breadcrumbs and potato, so the filling stays moist while the top browns; too little liquid can leave the filling dry.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (meat, pepper, butter):

  1. Capsicumfits about as well
  2. Potatothe original
  3. Asparagusfits less well
  4. Mustardfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against meat, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
