Sausage Rolls

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the sausages

  1. Plunge the fresh sausages into fast-boiling water and boil for a few minutes.

  2. Remove the skins and slit the sausages in half lengthwise.

Wrap and bake

  1. Lay a half sausage in the center of each square of puff pastry.

  2. Fold the pastry over the sausage, joining it neatly in the center and pressing the ends together.

  3. Place the rolls on a greased baking tin and brush them with beaten egg.

  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 15 minutes.

The flavor team

The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much their aromas overlap, and how often cooks already put them together.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fresh sausages
Provide the savory filling that forms the body of each roll.
Puff pastry
Forms the flaky, layered outer case that puffs and browns in the oven.
Egg
Brushed on top to give the pastry a glossy, golden browned finish.

The step that matters

Pressing the pastry ends together. If the seam is not sealed well, the pastry can open during baking and the filling may leak out. Neat sealing keeps the rolls intact while the pastry rises.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, pepper, sage):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Spinachfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, pepper, sage. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
