Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Gravy beef
Provides the meat flavour that gives the soup its body as it simmers in the stock.
Stock
Forms the liquid base of the soup and carries the flavour of the other ingredients.
Leeks
Add a mild onion-like aroma and sweetness to the broth.
Turnip
Adds mild sweetness and body as it softens in the broth.
Carrot
Contributes natural sweetness and colour to the soup.

The step that matters

Removing the fat from the stock. Fat left in the stock floats on the surface and makes a cloudy, greasy soup. Skimming it before the stock is heated keeps the broth clear and clean-tasting.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, carrot, turnip, leek, sugar):

  1. Lentilsfits better
  2. Beansfits better
  3. Chestnutfits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, carrot, turnip, leek, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
