Green Peas

Ingredients

Directions

Cook the peas

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil.

  2. Add the fresh peas and boil uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes until soft.

  3. Drain the peas and add salt and butter. Gently mix with a fork to avoid breaking the peas.

Tinned peas option

  1. If using tinned peas, rinse them in cold water to remove the tin taste.

  2. Heat the rinsed tinned peas in a saucepan with 2 tablespoons of butter until hot.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fresh green peas
Provide the main body and tender texture of the dish once boiled until soft.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smooth mouthfeel to the peas.

The step that matters

Boil the fresh peas until soft. Peas need enough time in boiling water for their starches to soften fully; undercooked peas stay firm and chalky, while overcooking makes them mushy and dull in colour.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar):

  1. Almondfits better
  2. Pecansfits better
  3. Filbertfits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
