Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide the starch and body that thicken the soup as they break down.
Milk
Adds creaminess and moisture, giving the soup a smooth, rich texture.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavour through the soup.

The step that matters

Rubbing the mashed potatoes through a sieve. Pushing the mash through a sieve breaks down any remaining lumps and fibres, so the soup turns smooth. Serving it immediately keeps it hot and at its best texture.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, milk, onion, butter, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Celerythe original
