Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Peel and quarter the apples, removing the cores.

  3. Place the apples in a baking dish with grated lemon peel, cloves, and sugar. Add a little water to the dish.

Assemble and bake

  1. Roll out the pie crust on a floured surface.

  2. Cut the crust thinly and moisten the edges with water.

  3. Cover the apples with the rolled-out crust, pressing the edges to seal. Cut off any excess crust with a knife.

  4. Bake in the oven until the crust is golden brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Provide the bulk of the filling, becoming soft and sweet as they bake.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the apples caramelise slightly in the baking dish.
Pie crust
Encloses the apples and browns to form the golden top of the tart.

The step that matters

Sealing the crust edges. Moistening and pressing the edges together creates a tight seal, so juices stay in the tart and the crust bakes evenly instead of leaking or drying out.

Swap the lemon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (apple, clove, sugar):

  1. Quincefits better
  2. Pearfits better
  3. Vanillafits better
  4. Lemonthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against apple, clove, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
