Spanish Onions Baked

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Boil

  1. Put unpeeled onions in a pot of salted boiling water.

  2. Boil rapidly for 1 hour.

  3. Wipe the onions dry.

  4. If onions are very large, boil longer before baking.

Wrap and bake

  1. Roll each onion in greased paper, twisting the ends to keep in the steam.

  2. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 1 to 2 hours.

  3. Once baked, remove the paper and peel the onions.

Serve

  1. Serve with butter, pepper, and salt, or with a rich Brown Sauce.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Large white-skinned onions
Provide the main body of the dish, becoming soft and sweet as they cook through.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavour when served over the hot onions.

The step that matters

Wrapping the onions in greased paper. Twisting the ends traps steam around the onion so it cooks through gently and stays moist, rather than drying out in the oven.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, sauce):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits about as well
  3. Mustardfits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
