Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Form the main body of the soup and provide natural sweetness and flavor.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavor as the carrots cook.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the carrots brown lightly while sautéing.
Bone stock
Supplies the liquid that cooks the carrots until soft and gives savory depth.

The step that matters

Rub the mixture through a sieve. Pressing cooked carrots through a sieve breaks down their fibers and starch, producing a smooth, even texture. Skipping or rushing this step leaves the soup grainy or stringy.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits about as well
  3. Sweet potatofits about as well
  4. Carrotthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
