Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Gravy beef
Gives the stock its meaty flavour as it simmers.
Stock
Forms the liquid base that carries the flavour of the whole soup.
Carrot
Adds sweetness and colour to the clear broth.
Turnip
Adds a mild, slightly sweet vegetable flavour to the broth.
Leek
Adds a gentle onion-like aroma to the soup.

The step that matters

Skim off the foam as it forms. Foam carries coagulated proteins and impurities from the beef and vegetables. Removing it as the stock boils keeps the soup clear and clean-tasting.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, carrot, turnip, leek):

  1. Lentilsfits better
  2. Beansfits better
  3. Chickpeafits better
