Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Form the bulk of the soup, giving body, sweetness, and its characteristic color once pureed.
Onions
Add savory depth and aromatic flavor as they soften during the long simmer.
Celery
Adds aromatic, savory background flavor that rounds out the vegetable base.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.
Stock
Provides the liquid base and savory depth for the soup.

The step that matters

Rubbing the mixture through a fine sieve. Pushing the cooked vegetables through a fine sieve breaks down fibers and removes skins and stringy bits, which is what makes the soup smooth rather than gritty or fibrous.

Swap the onion
