Birthday Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderate oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together.

  2. Add the flour and yolks of the eggs.

  3. Beat the whites to a firm froth and gently fold them in with a metal spoon.

  4. Add all the other ingredients and mix well.

  5. Pour into a cake tin lined with parchment paper, not greased.

  6. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) for nearly two hours.
