What each ingredient does

White silver-skin onions
Form the main body of the dish, softening to a tender, sweet vegetable when boiled.
Melted butter
Adds richness and a silky coating that carries flavour over the onions.

The step that matters

Drain the onions completely. Residual water dilutes the melted butter and seasoning, so they will not cling to the onions and the dish tastes watery.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
