Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Celery
Provides the main flavour and, once pulped, body to the soup.
Butter
Adds richness and carries flavour as the base of the roux.
Flour
Thickens the liquid into a smooth, creamy sauce when cooked with butter and milk.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softens the soup's flavour.

The step that matters

Stir the milk and stock in gradually. Adding liquid slowly to the butter and flour roux lets the starch disperse evenly, preventing lumps and giving a smooth, thickened base.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (celery, pepper, butter, milk, flour):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Onionthe original
