Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hops
Add a bitter, aromatic flavour that characterises the beer.
Potatoes
Supply starch that the yeast can work on, adding body to the brew.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars, producing carbonation and alcohol as the mixture rises.
Sugar
Provides the sugar that the yeast consumes during fermentation.

The step that matters

Stirring in the yeast when the mixture is warm. Yeast is killed by high heat, so adding it to a mixture that is still hot can stop fermentation. The mixture should be only warm before the yeast goes in, so it stays alive and can start fermenting.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (hops, sugar, coffee):

  1. Mustardfits about as well
  2. Potatothe original
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Cucumberfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against hops, sugar, coffee. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
