Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Provide the crisp, bulk body of the pickle.
Onions
Add pungent flavour and crunch that mellows during pickling.
Salt
Draws out moisture from the vegetables so they drain and stay crisp.
Olive oil
Coats the vegetables, adding richness and carrying the spice flavours.
Cold vinegar
Adds acidity that preserves and sharpens the pickle.

The step that matters

Draining the cucumbers and onions. Salting and draining for 6 hours removes excess water. If they stay wet, the pickle becomes diluted and soggy, and the oil and vinegar cannot coat and flavour them well.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cucumber, olive, celery, pepper, vinegar):
