Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tart apples
Break down into pulp to give the soup its body and apple flavour.
Flour
Thickens the soup as it boils, giving it a smoother, heavier consistency.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished soup.

The step that matters

Boil gently until the apples are soft and pulpy. Gentle boiling softens the apple fully so it breaks down into pulp for sieving. Boiling too hard can scorch the bottom of the pan and leave the texture uneven.
