  2. Combine the ground steak, cracker crumbs, boiling water, salt, pepper, and butter in a bowl.

  3. Mix well.

  4. Transfer the mixture to a bread pan to mold.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sirloin steak
Forms the main body of the loaf and gives it its meaty flavor and substance.
Cracker crumbs
Absorb liquid and bind the ground meat so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Boiling water
Hydrates the crumbs and keeps the loaf moist during baking.
Butter
Adds fat for richer flavor and a softer, more tender texture.

The step that matters

Let it stand for 2 hours. Resting lets the crumbs fully absorb the boiling water and hydrate evenly, so the loaf binds firmly and stays moist rather than crumbling or drying out in the oven.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Sagethe original
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Tarragonfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
