Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creams with sugar to add richness and a tender texture to the filling.
Eggs
Bind the filling and help it set into a sliceable custard-like texture when baked.
Molasses
Adds dark color, sweetness, and a deep, rich flavor.
Soda crackers
Crushed crackers add body and absorb liquid, giving the filling structure without fruit.
Raisins
Add chewy texture and concentrated sweetness in the filling.

The step that matters

Bake until set. Eggs thicken as they heat, so baking only until the filling is set keeps it tender and smooth; overbaking can make the eggs curdle and turn the texture grainy and dry.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, cider, molasses, sugar, egg, raisin, brandy):

  1. Applefits about as well
