Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide the starchy bulk that mashes into a soft, fluffy texture.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, giving the mash a smoother mouthfeel and flavor.
Milk
Adds moisture and softness, loosening the mash into a creamy consistency.

The step that matters

Mashing while the potatoes are hot and well drained. Excess water leaves the mash soggy and thin, while overworking cooked potatoes can make them gluey because released starch becomes sticky. Mashing them while warm and drained gives a smoother, lighter texture.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, butter, egg, milk, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Dillfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, butter, egg, milk, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
