Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Become tender and mildly sweet as they cook, forming the body of the dish.
Milk
Adds moisture and a soft, creamy texture to the onions.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smooth, buttery flavour.

The step that matters

Simmer the onions gently in the milk. Gentle heat keeps the milk from scorching, sticking, or curdling. Vigorous boiling can break down milk proteins and leave the sauce grainy or burnt on the bottom of the pot.
