Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Peel and finely chop the apples.

  2. Prepare the biscuit dough and roll it out.

  3. Place the chopped apples in the center of the dough.

  4. Fold the dough over the apples and place them in a deep pan without crowding.

Bake

  1. Add ½ cup sugar, ½ nutmeg, and 1 quart of boiling water to the pan.

  2. Dot with butter and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 45 minutes, turning occasionally.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Provide the fruit filling that softens and sweetens as it bakes.
Dough for biscuits
Wraps the apples and forms the tender, baked outer casing.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the syrup in the pan turn rich and dark.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, and helps the top brown as it melts.

The step that matters

Fold the dough without crowding the pan. Crowded dumplings bake unevenly and can stay doughy where they touch. Giving each one room lets heat reach the dough and the apples evenly.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (biscuit, sugar, nutmeg, butter, egg):
