Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Clams
Provide the main flavour and body of the soup as the chopped seafood.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the broth.
Cream
Adds richness and smoothness, softening the broth's savoury flavour.

The step that matters

Adding the cream and boiling again. Cream can curdle when it is boiled hard or for too long, especially in an acidic or salty liquid. Adding it at the end and keeping the soup at a gentle boil for only 5 minutes helps keep it smooth.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (clam, butter, cream, pepper):

  1. Parsleythe original
  2. Nutmegfits about as well
  3. Celeryfits less well
  4. Garlicfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against clam, butter, cream, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
