Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fowl
Provides the meat and flavourful broth as it simmers in the water.
Flour
Forms the dumplings and thickens the soup as starch binds with liquid.
Butter
Adds richness and tenderness to the dumplings through fat.
Egg yolks
Enrich and thicken the soup as the proteins set with gentle heat.

The step that matters

Stirring in the egg yolks. Yolks can curdle or turn grainy if the soup is boiling hard when they go in. Keeping the heat gentle helps them thicken the broth smoothly.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, flour, butter, egg):

  1. Parsleythe original
  2. Nutmegfits about as well
  3. Capersfits less well
  4. Tarragonfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, flour, butter, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
