Directions

The book says “a hot oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare the dough

  1. Roll the biscuit dough to about ¼ inch thickness.

  2. Brush the dough with melted butter.

  3. Sprinkle with seedless raisins, sugar, cinnamon, chopped apples, pecans, and currants.

Roll and bake

  1. Roll up the dough like a jelly roll.

  2. Place on a buttered baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.

  3. Cut into slices and serve with whipped cream.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Biscuit dough
Forms the wrapper that bakes into a tender, layered roll around the filling.
Melted butter
Adds richness and helps the dough brown as it bakes.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the surface brown.
Chopped apples
Add moisture and fruit flavor to the filling.
Seedless raisins
Add chewy sweetness that concentrates as the filling bakes.

The step that matters

Roll up the dough like a jelly roll. Roll snugly and evenly so the spiral holds its shape and the filling stays inside. Loose rolling lets filling spill out and leaves gaps that bake unevenly.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (biscuit, butter, raisin, sugar, cinnamon, apple, pecans):
