Dainty Fruit Salad

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the fruit

  1. In a bowl, combine diced oranges, pineapple, and 2 diced bananas with confectioners’ sugar, shredded coconut, lemon juice, and chopped nuts.

  2. Mix everything together and place on salad plates in small heaps.

Dress and finish

  1. Slice the remaining 2 bananas thinly and arrange the slices in circles around the fruit mixture.

  2. Drizzle with French dressing.

  3. Whip the double cream until stiff and either pipe it in rose shapes on top of the salad or spoon it in a heap over the diced fruit.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bananas
Provide sweetness and a soft, creamy texture that holds the salad together.
Oranges
Add juicy acidity and fresh flavour that brightens the sweeter fruit.
Double cream
Whipped to stiff peaks, it adds richness and a light, airy topping.
Confectioners’ sugar
Dissolves readily into the fruit juices, adding sweetness throughout the salad.

The step that matters

Whip the double cream until stiff. Cream under-whipped stays runny and slumps on the salad, while over-whipping turns it grainy and can cause it to separate. Stopping at stiff peaks keeps the topping shapeable for piping or spooning.

Flavor stand-ins for the nuts

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (orange, pineapple, banana, sugar, coconut, lemon, cream):

  2. Pistachiobetter flavor fit
  3. Macadamia nutbetter flavor fit
  4. Nutsthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against orange, pineapple, banana, sugar, coconut, lemon, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
