Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Celery
Provides the main flavour and body of the soup once cooked and pressed.
Milk
Forms the creamy base of the soup and adds richness and mild sweetness.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, and helps the flour form a smooth thickener.
Flour
Thickens the soup as it heats, giving it a smooth, thick texture.

The step that matters

Adding the butter and flour mixture. Flour clumps if dropped into hot liquid unmixed. Rubbing it with butter first coats the particles so they disperse, and constant stirring keeps the thickening smooth.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, butter, flour, pepper):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
