Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Thickens the hot water into a smooth, cohesive sauce that holds the meat together.
Cold meat
Provides the main protein and savory body of the filling.
Mashed potato
Forms a soft topping that becomes lightly browned in the oven.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the onion base and carries its flavor.
Beaten egg white
Sets and helps the potato topping hold structure and brown lightly when baked.

The step that matters

Adding the hot water to the flour mixture. Pouring it in gradually while stirring keeps the flour dispersed, so the sauce thickens smoothly instead of forming lumps.
