With Raisins

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour with the milk gradually to avoid lumps.

  3. Add the melted butter, beaten eggs, golden syrup, and baking powder to the mixture.

Bake and serve

  1. Pour the batter into 2 buttered pans, about 1 inch deep, and sprinkle the raisins evenly on top.

  2. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until light brown.

  3. Serve in squares with lemon syrup or any pudding.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Provides the main structure that holds the bread together as it sets.
Eggs
Add structure and richness, helping the batter set and bind during baking.
Butter
Adds fat for a tender crumb and rich flavour.
Golden syrup
Adds sweetness and helps the crust brown during baking.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the batter, helping the bread rise and lighten.
Raisins
Add pockets of sweetness and chewy texture on the surface.

The step that matters

Bake until light brown. Baking only until light brown keeps the crumb moist; overbaking dries the batter as moisture evaporates, making the bread tough.

Swap the raisin

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, milk, butter, syrup, egg):

  1. Vanillafits about as well
  2. Raisinthe original
  3. Figfits less well
  4. Coconutfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, milk, butter, syrup, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
