Why it works: Wheat and biscuit match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 9% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 116 recipes. Both carry nonanal, which smells fat, citrus. The science ↓
Oysters in Shredded Wheat Cases
Ingredients
Directions
The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.
Prepare the cases
Cut an oblong cavity in the top of each shredded wheat biscuit and remove the top and inside shreds to form a case.
Fill each case with the drained oysters.
Drop 1 tablespoon of butter on top of the oysters and sprinkle with salt and cayenne.
Replace the top of each biscuit.
Bake and serve
Heat a baking pan, place the cases on it, cover, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes.
Serve very hot, pouring over them either Drawn Butter Sauce or Cream Sauce before serving.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.

The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much their aromas overlap, and how often cooks already put them together.

What each ingredient does
- Shredded wheat biscuits
- Form a crisp, absorbent case that holds the oysters while they bake.
- Oysters
- Provide the main filling, releasing their own juices and savoury flavour as they cook.
- Butter
- Adds richness and moisture, helping the oysters stay tender in the oven.
The step that matters
Baking the covered cases. Oysters overcook quickly and turn rubbery when exposed to high heat for too long. Covering the pan and baking at a moderate 350°F gently cooks them through while the biscuit case stays intact.
