Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a slow oven”. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Make the batter

  1. Cream the butter in a bowl.

  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar.

  3. Slowly mix in the milk, then add the flour and vanilla.

Bake and shape

  1. Spread the mixture very thinly on the top of an inverted bread pan.

  2. Score into 3-inch squares.

  3. Bake in a slow oven at 300 °F (150 °C) until delicately brown.

  4. Roll into a cornucopia shape over the handle of a wooden spoon.

  5. Color with vegetable coloring if desired.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to form the base, adding fat and richness to the wafers.
Milk
Adds moisture that loosens the batter so it spreads thinly.
Bread flour
Provides structure so the baked wafers hold their shape when rolled.
Powdered sugar
Sweetens the batter and dissolves easily into the creamed butter.

The step that matters

Spread the mixture very thinly. A thin layer bakes quickly and evenly into a crisp, pliable wafer. Thick spots stay soft and tear when rolled, and browning becomes uneven.
