Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Canned tomatoes
Provide the main liquid body and tomato flavour of the soup.
Frozen green peas
Add sweetness and soft texture to the finished soup.
Frozen green beans
Add tender bite and fresh vegetable texture to the soup.
Pasta
Adds starch and body, making the soup more filling as it cooks.
Margarine
Adds fat that carries flavour and gives the soup a richer mouthfeel.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savory, salty flavour when sprinkled on top.

The step that matters

Cook uncovered 10-12 minutes, until pasta is tender. Pasta keeps absorbing liquid and softening after it leaves the heat, so it can turn mushy if held too long. Stopping at tender and serving promptly keeps the texture intact.

Swap the peas

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Chickpeafits better
  3. Sesamefits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, sauce, carrot, celery, onion, green beans, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
