Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Dried peas or beans
Break down into a thick, smooth body that gives the soup its texture.
Onion
Builds a savory aromatic base as it cooks down into the soup.
Carrots
Add natural sweetness, color, and soft body to the soup.
Butter
Adds fat that rounds out flavor and gives a richer, silkier mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Boiling after adding the butter and parsley. Once butter is stirred in, a hard boil can cause the fat to separate and dulls the fresh, bright flavor of the parsley. Heat the soup only until it is hot enough to serve.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, carrot, butter, parsley, pepper):

  1. Chickpeafits better
  2. Beansfits better
  3. Black-eyed peafits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, carrot, butter, parsley, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
