Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. In a bowl, mix the sugar and butter until creamy.

  3. Beat in the eggs, then add the baking soda dissolved in boiling water.

  4. In another bowl, mix the flour and spices, then add to the butter mixture.

  5. Sift in 1¼ cups of flour and fold in the nuts, raisins, and currants.

  6. The dough will be very stiff.

  7. Drop teaspoonfuls of dough onto a buttered baking pan, spacing them apart.

  8. Bake slowly for about 30 minutes.
