Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread
Soaks up the milk and forms the soft, bulky body of the pudding.
Milk
Softens the bread and adds moisture so the pudding stays tender.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and set during baking to give the pudding its structure.
Suet or dripping
Adds fat that enriches the texture and keeps the pudding moist.

The step that matters

Simmer gently until the bread is soft. Rapid boiling can scorch the milk and break the bread into an uneven mush. Gentle heat lets the bread absorb liquid evenly, giving a smooth base that sets well when baked.
