Beefsteak

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the steak

  1. Cut the tender part of the beef from the steak, trimming it into an oval shape.

  2. Broil the steak over a hot fire for about 2 minutes, turning it two or three times without piercing it.

Season and finish

  1. Once cooked rare, sprinkle with salt and pepper, then place a small piece of butter on top.

  2. Set the steak in the oven for 1 minute to allow the butter to soak in.

Serve with sides

  1. If serving with potatoes, bake them, remove the insides, mash until smooth, and season with butter or cream and salt.

  2. Press the mashed potatoes through a colander to create a vermicelli-like appearance around the steak.

  3. If using peas, heat them with a little salt and butter, avoiding excess juice.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef steak
Provides the main protein; cooked rare, it stays tender and juicy inside.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture, melting over the hot steak to carry flavor into the meat.
Potatoes
Form a soft, creamy mash that makes a mild base to pair with the seared steak.

The step that matters

Broiling the steak for only about 2 minutes. Steak is cooked rare, so a short, very hot sear browns the surface while the interior stays rare. Turning it gently, without piercing, keeps juices inside the meat.

Swap the potato

The recipe marks potato as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter, peas):

  1. Asparagusfits about as well
  2. Capsicumfits about as well
  3. Potatothe original
  4. Shallotfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, butter, peas. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
