Queen's Toast

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cut slices of stale baker's bread into rounds with a cake cutter, removing all crust.

  2. Fry the rounds in sweet lard until light brown.

  3. Dip each round quickly into boiling water to remove excess fat.

  4. Sprinkle both sides thickly with a mixture of powdered sugar and nutmeg.

  5. Pile the rounds on a hot plate.

  6. If desired, heat a glass of wine and add a teaspoonful to each piece after dipping in water and before sugar coating.

  7. Serve hot.
